Slieve Bloom Storytelling Festival

When: 13th Oct to 18th Oct 2008
Location: Slieve Blooms
Web site: www.slievebloom.ie/

Within this landscape of mountains, valleys, glens, waterfalls, ancient raths and medieval castles, in the heart of Ireland, it is rich in music and folklore, and  is an ideal setting for a festival of oral storytelling, music, dance and song.

The stories that have been told for generations by the people who live on and around these mountains are bound up with the landscape, place names and the history of the area which stretches back to before the time of the druids; there are stories of invasions, plantations and rebellions, fairy lore and ghost stories, as well as the necessary yarns and tall tales which Irish people love.

Storytelling up to recent times happened in a very natural way by the fireside in rambling houses all over Laois and Offaly. The rambling houses are no more, but the interest in the stories is still alive.

Visitors to the Slieve Blooms will discover a new landscape of the imagination in these mountains and local people will rediscover the magic of the stories of their own place through the art of storytelling which will be brought to you by great storytellers, some local, who have all developed a keen interest in the revival of storytelling by featuring at the Storytelling Festivals in Ireland.

On the 16th October 2008, there will be storytelling in the Great Hall of the O' Carrolls. Kinnitty Castle are offering a special B & B rate of €75 pp sharing - contact reservations on 057 9137318.
